For many years I proclaimed that there was not a more important tool for a healthy kitchen that a Vita-Mix®. I also proclaimed that no other blender-type tool even came close to the Vita-Mix®. I still believe that I was correct for most of those years, but somewhere along the line the Blendtec® entered the scene.
Initially, I was merely annoyed by the blatant, overdramatic “Will it blend?” commercials. I wasn’t impressed by blending cell phones or marbles–I am impressed by how well such a tool will process natural, nutritious whole foods. My question was “Will it blend FOOD?” Recently I got my answer.
I wore the blade bearings out in my Vita-Mix® for the second time. We used it several times every day, so that was to be expected. What was unexpected, however, was that Vita-Mix® had no replacements in stock. To tide me over I bought an Osterizer® that claimed to be able to crush ice.
Three of those later (don’t ever believe that they will actually blend whole food, or ice!) I decided to get serious about Vita-Mix® blades. STILL out of stock! HOW RUDE! I decided to take another look at the “Will It Blend?” videos …
I found a demonstration video that showed the preparation of actual food, and, although what they proposed to be “healthy” was absurd, I was impressed by the demonstration. I decided to try one. The down-payment cost of the whole unit was close to the cost of just a replacement jar with blades for the Vita-Mix®, and I figured I could return it if it was a scam, so why not?
Well, the truth is, I LOVE the Blendtec®! It is more powerful than the Vita-Mix®, and it has flush-surface buttons that engage pre-selected programs for different common food processing tasks. The best thing is that it will turn itself off at the end of the process, allowing us to multi-task without turning everything into hot soup.
So, did I toss my Vita-Mix®? Definitely not! I still love it, and I will love it even more if I can ever get replacement blades for it, but I do have to eat a little crow and acknowledge that the Blendtec® is a much better blender.
Oh, and did I mention that the Blendtec® costs less?
