Most people are going as fast as they can through life, but in reverse gear. They are astonished when they crash and burn – again and again. This comes from the erroneous belief in “Have – Do – Be.”

Are you a have – do – be person? Does your thinking run along the lines of “If I only had enough money, then I could do all the things that I want to do, and I would be happy.” If so, I have a wake-up call for you. You have the process exactly in reverse. Further, this error is the root of all your problems. I understand that you most likely learned to think that way from your parents, teachers, peers, etc. – but now you get to choose your own path.

The people who are consistently happy are the ones who choose to be happy, irrespective of the circumstances that surround them. I am not talking about an empty, pretend happiness that collapses when things get rougher – I am talking about a choice to be respectful and trusting of our Creator, and to appreciate the precious gifts that we have in the moment, no matter whether we recognize them as gifts or not.

One of the greatest gifts I ever received resulted from a serious automobile accident. I was in Korea at the time – many miles away from what we would consider to be “civilized” medical aid. The jeep in which I was riding rolled over, coming to rest with its right front fender across my chest. Many of my ribs were broken, both my lungs were collapsed, and my heart was compressed and shoved off to the extreme right side of my chest cavity. There was more than enough damage to my body to have killed me, yet it was not my time to go.

It was at that moment that I was introduced to my Creator. I was privileged to observe a series of “miracles” occur within and without my body as I was virtually re-plumbed and re-prioritized to keep my body alive until I reached medical aid many hours later. This was particularly poignant, considering that I had been an atheist up to the moment of the crash.

Although I did not remember my Enlightening experience until several years later, my life was permanently and irrevocably changed. I had a new inherent attitude of gratitude, and I began to be fascinated by matters of the Spirit. Suddenly people started sending me books that further awakened me to the Wholeness of my existence. Although I had read most of the Christian "Holy Bible" before the accident, rereading it was like reading an entirely different book. The words may have been the same, but the messages were entirely different. I developed a fascination for different religions.  Some of these studies awakened me to spirituality.

As a result of being crushed and mutilated, I became grateful to just be! I had come very close to not being at all, or at least being in a very different way. I lost my attitude that life owed me something, and came to realize that it was me that owed for my very existence. I also became aware that I did not need to do anything or to have anything in order to be. My very presence was more than proof enough that I was supposed to be here.

From this very solid foundation of being I have gone on to do the things that are consistent with my being. As a result, I now have much more than I need. I greatly appreciate every little thing, incidence, even life’s little ”pains”. Apparently I needed a severe wake-up call to get my attention.

Hopefully you will not be as hard-headed as I was. If you respond to life from have-do-be, change your mind now. Shift out of reverse gear and into overdrive. Recognize who and what you are. Be Universally grateful for every aspect of your being.  Do what you know you must do, based on who you are, and you will have all that you need. The immediate and ultimate result of be-do-have living is Bliss – the healthiest state of all.
